Environment & Climate.
We assume responsibility for the natural environment. With our Group-wide environmental management system, we are dedicated to sustainable and resource-conserving practices.
Knorr-Bremse is committed to a comprehensive environmental policy: we treat natural resources responsibly, reduce CO2 emissions, minimize undesirable impacts on nature and try to avoid these wherever possible. The principles of our environmental management are based on our global HSE Policy (Health, Safety and Environment).
In our Group-wide HSE Policy we commit to minimizing or preventing harm to people and the environment arising from our processes, services and products. To this end, we have introduced an environmental management system at all our production sites. Where relevant, we have our sites certified in accordance with the international environmental management standard ISO 14001. We regularly record and evaluate environmental performance indicators and set environmental targets at Group and site level. We also promote environmental awareness among our employees through various communication measures and training courses.
Knorr-Bremse strives to continuously reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions; we identify concrete measures to help achieve this every year. Improvements in plant engineering and process selection, together with modernization measures, help us to fulfil our environmental responsibilities. We have energy-intensive production sites certified in accordance with the ISO 50001 international standard for energy management.
Focus on Climate Protection
One focus of our commitment to the environment is climate protection. Knorr-Bremse concentrates most of its climate protection activities in the areas of products, logistics and energy. This is where we see our biggest impact – and where we can make the biggest difference. With our climate protection goals for 2020, we want to make a measurable contribution to climate protection.
It makes both economic and ecological sense to use natural resources sparingly and efficiently and to implement environmentally sound waste management. Besides improving our energy efficiency, we focus particularly on using water sustainably and using production materials sparingly. The materials chosen should be as harmless and environmentally friendly as possible. When it comes to waste management, Knorr-Bremse is guided by the principle of sustainable closed-loop waste management. Our primary objective is to reduce total waste and, in particular, to avoid generating hazardous waste. Where this is not possible, we are committed to environmentally-compatible recovery systems.
